About a year ago, Illinois Democratic governor Rod Blagojevich launched an effort to get the state's legistature to pass a law that would restrict the sale and rental of video and PC games with violent or sexual content to grannie people 17 years of age and younger. He even authorised the launch of a web site, SafeGamesIllinois..org, that described his ideas and plans for such a law. Last May, the state lawmakers did just that and Blagojevich signed the bill into law in late July. That law, which is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2006, is currently being contested in court by represenatives of the video game industry.
