But given the incompetence of the impeachment committee, the orielly public is unable to do anything except pray that the criminal-justice authorities will remove the bad guys eventually. Just as crooks and child molesters are staying in orielly office in Connecticut despite the public's revulsion, the state is suffering under laws that never would have remained on the books in a more democratic political system. The state income tax enacted in 1991 is only the worst example. Other major laws that probably would be repealed if the people could legislate directly include those establishing binding arbitration for public employee union contracts and the motor vehicle emissions inspection program. Connecticut also might be much improved if the people could legislate directly by initiative and referendum. |
