If people are voting on the basis of abortion or gay rights, then they are unlikely to switch because of the other party's tax platform or approach to education. Those things are indicative of a certain view of personal autonomy in which compromise isn't very likely. I have very little hope that all this tweaking around the edges of the abortion issue with talk of abstinence or birth control will make any inroads into the GOP coalition.
