A majority of managers say they wouldn't hesitate to hire older workers, according to a 2003 survey of 428 companies by the Society for Human Resource Management. But 70 percent of those surveyed provide no provisions or benefits for older workers, and 60 percent are not trying to capitalize on their experience. Still, there are signs of an awakening. |

| "There's an old adage that age lends wisdom," says career planning Landau, who turns 102 next week but looks about 80. "I can't quarrel with that." Not many of us will be working at 101, but in many ways, Landau, a widower who practices law with his 75-year-old son, is a poster boy of the future workforce. By 2010, almost one in three workers will be 50 or older. Eighty percent of baby boomers say they expect to work past career planning retirement age. That means that soon it will be common for seniors to keep working both to boost career planning their finances and stay engaged. And we will dearly need their expertise. The irony is that as the 78 million boomers begin retiring in the next few years, creating labor shortages in many industries, this same cohort could prove to be an economic salvation, since so many boomers can and want to work part time, on a project basis or for themselves. |
