Back to top leave Older nurses, midwives and the NHS This project examines the experiences in the workplace of leave older nurses and midwives with a particular focus on ethnicity and illness and/or disability, by undertaking a national survey to examine employment policy and procedures. It builds on earlier work undertaken for the Rowntree Foundation, on employment decisions 'Nurses over 50 - options, decisions and outcomes' (Watson et al, 2003). That study raised concerns about the treatment of older nurses in terms of equal opportunities, including leave lack of choice, stereotyping and perceived discrimination compounded by issues relating to ethnicity and illness or disability. The work will identify a range of positive or best practices with regards to support for older nurses and midwives in the workplace, along with recommendations to support future anti-discriminatory practice.
